Picusscalprus barlowei Fossil

Relief fossil, sculpture of P. barlowei from “The Fossils on Mars.”
1:1 scale. Mixed media (see below). 2024.

Illustration of P. barlowei.

How was it made?

This started as a large slab of plaster mixed with sand and acrylic paint. A sketch was traced onto the slab, then carved into with already worn tools (the sand would damage them even further). To create more convincing depth, the bones closer to the surface were sculpted onto with Miliput to make them appear to be ‘popping’ out of the cleared matrix. The wings were created seperately, and are plaster casts of rubber gloves pinned at the finger joints over a clay approximate of each wing. They were then slotted into deep holes, and the gaps were filled with stony texture paste which had also been spread around the sculpture to create a more authentic texture. It was finished with acrylic paint.
