Oxalaia quilombensis

Watercolour, colour pencil. 2023.

This is a highly speculative reconstruction of the animal, and as such many details are fabricated.

We only know of Oxalaia from two skull fragments that have since been lost, but it’s enough to determine it to be a spinosaurid - some researchers believe the remains to represent Spinosaurus itself. This interpretation assumes it to be its own animal so the proportions are slightly different, and the design is based on the concept of the sail’s function serving as a communicative structure for display, intimidation, etc. As such  it also has a flambouyant colouration not seen in today’s largest animals, which was inspired by loons and sea kraits.
